A WOMAN from Hayes is one of the first to be nominated for the 2012 Local Heroes awards for her caring and kindness in looking after an elderly neighbour.
Pearl Bloom, 70, of Kelf Grove, has been looking after 100-year-old Bea Wallis for three years.
Pearl’s friend and fellow carer, Pat Reilly, also from Hayes, read about the launch of this year’s awards and decided she had to put Pearl’s name forward.
She said: “Pearl really does everything for the old lady. I think she deserves a medal.”
That thought was echoed by Mrs Wallis herself, who said: “She is a wonderful person. She comes in several times a day to make me lunch or a cup of tea and then each evening she takes me into her house and I sleep there until the carers come in the morning.”
Modest Pearl is quick to brush off the praise, saying: “It’s just what anybody would do. You can’t just sit at home and ignore someone as lovely as Bea, who needs a little help.”
Pearl is one of many people whose names will be put forward in our annual competition – the 10th – which recognises the incredible bravery, commitment and dedication shown by unsung heroes across the borough.
Anyone who lives, works or volunteers in Hillingdon is eligible to be nominated in one of the five categories: Outstanding Young Person, Star Carer, Courageous Citizen, Fabulous Fundraiser or Community Champion. An overall Hero of Hillingdon award will be given to the category winner whom the judges feel most deserves the accolade.
If you know someone who deserves credit for doing a good deed, nominate them by filling in the form on this page or online – see below for details.
The deadline for entries is 5.30pm on Friday, June 8 and the judging panel will make its selections shortly afterwards.
Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a gala evening to be held at Hayes Community Campus, in Coldharbour Lane, Hayes, on Thursday, July 12.
Each category winner will receive a trophy and £200 cash. The Hero of Hillingdon will win a further £500 and a trophy. Runners-up will each receive £50.
