THE future of the former Union Market site in Fulham remains unclear after US restaurant chain The Cheesecake Factory ruled itself out of the running.

Industry sources flagged the firm as being the front runner to take over the Fulham Broadway site, following the closure of the Union Market grocery shop last month.

But, while the company, which has more than 160 branches in North America, admits it is looking to open its first restaurant in Britain soon, it says it has yet to identify a suitable site.

The president of the California-based chain, Mike Jannini, told the Chronicle: "While we are very interested in global expansion, including in the UK, and have been exploring opportunities there, we have not found one that is exactly right for us just yet."

A spokeswoman added there were no plans 'at present' for the chain to come to Fulham.

Union Market was forced into administration after struggling to pay its £300,000 per year sub-lease to the former occupants of the site, TGI Friday.
