FIREFIGHTERS narrowly averted an inferno after a blaze that ripped through gas cylinders and oil drums in Feltham.

It took 30 firefighters more than three hours to get the house and caravan fire in Hounslow Road under control on Saturday (June 9).

One women was left requiring hospital treatment, and another needed treatment at the scene. The flames gutted the caravan and damaged the house.

Some of the fire brigade had just arrived at Feltham Carnival, ready to show and tell, but had to head out again the minute they arrived.

Andy Blackwell, was driving from Ashford to Amworth to visit his father, when he got caught up in all the traffic.

He said: "I was passing by and there was a massive fire, I couldn't see it but there was a lot of smoke. It caused utter gridlock and the trains weren't stopping at Feltham station. The traffic was terrible."

A spokeswoman from the London Fire Brigade said: "The caravan was completely destroyed by the fire and part of the house was damaged. Because of the cylinders around it was considered a hazard zone."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
