An investigation is under way into a fire which caused extensive damage to a celebrated fish and chip shop early this morning.

Firefighters from across south-west London raced to tackle the blaze after it broke out on the ground floor of Fisher's restaurant in Fulham High Street just before 6.30am.

Around 10 people living in flats above the shop escaped before the arrival of crews from Fulham, Chelsea, Clapham and Hammersmith. It took an hour and 20 minutes to get the fire under control and the brigade remained on site during the morning rush hour, checking the flames had not spread to neighbouring businesses.

Fisher's boasts of having served fish and chips to the people of Fulham and Putney since 1982. It has a narrow takeaway area and adjoining restaurant and is a favourite of local residents.

The restaurant was given a five-star review in February by Time Out, which said: "If you do choose to eat in, you can fully appreciate the crisp batter encasing the market-fresh fish, and the perfectly dry golden chips straight from the fryer. The mushy peas - correctly made from dried marrowfat peas with no added colouring or sweetener - are also exemplary, and even the tartare sauce is own-made."

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
