Firefighters opened the doors of the Harrow Fire Station to the Gurkha community on Thursday (March 12).

More than 60 people attended the one-stop shop, co-hosted with charity CRI, which is working to help Gurkhas settling in London to adjust to living in new areas.

People were thrilled to see a display drill in action thanks to crews from Harrow blue watch as well as receive advice about fire safety in the home and crime prevention.

The event also gave the chance for people to network and find out more about what services were available to them from the fire department, as well as information from officers of the Metropolitan Police, the NHS, Harrow Council, AGE UK and Citizens Advice.

Borough commander, Richard Claydon, said: "It was a fantastic day; a great opportunity to work with a community that we’ve not engaged with in the past and who have greatly benefited from all the support that's been offered by all of our partners.

"It's also been a great opportunity to work in partnership with Gurkha support groups to plan taking this forward in other boroughs."
