THE number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured on Hounslow's roads last year was 17, new figures reveal.

The statistic was highlighted as part of a national safety campaign encouraging drivers to look out for motorcyclists.

Bikers account for just one per cent of traffic, but nearly a fifth of deaths on Britain's roads.

In November last year, a 41-year-old biker was killed in a collision on the A316 in Hanworth, near Apex Corner.

A £3.5million advertising campaign, launched this week, features bikers with flashing neon lights attached to their backs.

Road safety minister Paul Clark said: "We are working hard to tackle the unacceptable number of collisions where motorcyclists are killed on Britain's roads and our THINK! campaigns are a vital part of this. I hope this bold new approach will help to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed or hurt in crashes with cars."

In 2008, 493 motorcyclists were killed on Britain's roads and another 5,556 were seriously injured.
