NEW festive lights set to decorate Brentford High Street have been designed to promote the area, rather than carry Christmas greetings.

The nine light structures will carry the slogan 'Brentford is Brilliant' in white, yellow and red, but organisers have been quick to reassure shopkeepers and residents that the Christmas theme is not being ignored.

Brentford Chamber of Commerce executive member Tim Luckett, who is involved in the Christmas lights project said: "We have had Christmas lights in Brentford for four years now with the majority attached to lamp posts and to trees.

"This year we have received money from Mayor Boris Johnson's Greater London Fund and there will be additional lights using the 'Brentford is Brilliant' logo, which the Brentford High Street Steering Group is using to try and attract people to the high street.

"These are additional lights and it's not a case of ignoring the Christmas theme, but instead taking the opportunity to advertise and promote Brentford.

"The area is a little bit run down at the moment and it's important to try and build it up a bit - that's what we're trying to do with these lights.

"It is a community led and community financed project, but we were lucky enough to get additional finances this year. We're proud of the lights and proud to be able to provide them for the people of Brentford."

Each 'Brentford is Brilliant' sign will cost £510 and there will also be lights all along the High Street with a Christmas tree in the piazza area.
