A NEW gold-engraved plaque was unveiled to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Feltham’s first multi-storey block of flats.

Around 50 residents of Frank Towell Court in Glebelands Road marked the building’s half-century with a party for friends, family and neighbours, last Saturday.

Elsie Devereux, the only remaining original resident, joined the celebrations along with Mayor of Hounslow Sachin Gupta, members of the Feltham History Group – including Chronicle historian Eddie Menday – and Feltham firefighters.

Frank Towell was an alderman member of Feltham Urban District Council and chairman of the authority’s housing committee when the homes block was opened in 1963.

Resident Rene Wootten was behind the event. She said: "The mayor came to cut the ribbon on the plaque and we had a lovely cake. Everybody enjoyed themselves."

People indulged in food from around the world, scooped up a homemade 50th anniversary cake made by Carol Cattemull of nearby Southern Avenue, and there was a display of old photographs.

Activities for children included a bouncy castle, face painting, henna tattoos, a merry-go-round and ice-cream.
