Staff at Feltham Young Offenders Institution were attacked by inmates over 100 times last year - the second highest figure in England and Wales.

The startling statistic was revealed in a recently-released league table which showed the YOI, off Bedfont Road, had seen 107 assaults on prison officers in 2007.

Only Peterborough Prison recorded more, with 115 similar attacks, but across England and wales there were 2,916 assaults on staff in the year, down from 3,148 in the previous 12 months.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "Violence in prisons is not tolerated in any form. Assaults on prison staff are taken very seriously and depending on the severity will be dealt with internally or referred to the police."
