Traffic chaos could hit Paddington after a major water works were announced.

Thames Water is replacing water mains in the area bordered by Sussex Gardens, Edgware Road and Bayswater Road, from January 2009 until April 2010.

More than eight miles of iron mains will be removed, and replaced with new plastic pipes.

Project manager for Thames Water Neil Franks said: "We appreciate that work of this nature does bring inevitable disruption, but this huge investment will bring benefits to the area for years to come, as we should not have to carry out repairs here in future.

"We're working closely with Westminster Council to reduct the impact on traffic and thereby minimise disruption."
