ARTISTS, poets and members of the community gathered to mark the closing of a popular creative space.

Electric House, Willesden Lane, is part of the Meanwhile Project and has played host to Brent Artists Resource (BAR) and a variety of community organisations for seven months.

It is closing as Network Housing Group have submitted a planning application to redevelop the site into flats, and Brent Council is working with the group to help it find alternative premises.

On Tuesday last week, people who have been involved with the project and people from the community gathered for an exhibition entitled Chrysalis, with work from BAR members on show and there were speeches from people involved with the project and entertainment from poets and musicians.

The first floor, a former office which had been painted white from floor to ceiling, was opened up and featured an intricate work made from thousands of grey threads running through the building from artist Sally Buchanan [pictured above by Brian Okello].

A Brent Council spokeswoman said: “Brent is delivering several projects in Willesden Green which we hope will support the vitality and viability of the High Street. We are looking into the possibility of securing another vacant shop on the High Street and if we are able to find suitable premises will be inviting the local community to take part and use the space. Meanwhile, BAR have also been invited to apply to use a new space opportunity in South Kilburn.”
