A CONCERNED grandson claims the police have not done enough to help his grandfather whose home was burgled.

Tyler Smith, 11, contacted the Observer after his grandfather’s home in Oxleay Road, Rayners Lane, was burgled by five men who stole a safe and injured two of his grandfather’s friends.

One of the victims, 74-year-old Brian Breed, had his jaw broken by the intruders.

Tyler, who lives with his mum, Cheryl, dad Simon and younger brother Jude in Winston Close, Hatch End. said: “He is quite upset by it and now he wants to move away because he doesn’t like it here. He wants to move to Amersham.”

The Hatch End High School pupil added: “Overall it makes me sad and angry as the police seem to be doing nothing about it when they should be. How can I and my friends have confidence in them when violent crime is treated with little importance?”

Grandfather-of-14, Tony Large, had been having dinner at a nearby pub, on Sunday, January 8, when two of his friends returned to his house and were attacked by the intruders.

The former bus driver had a rare coin collection stolen, a large amount of cash and jewellery of great sentimental value.

However, Mr Large claims the police haven’t spoken to him in detail about the incident and he is unhappy they are treating the crime as a burglary rather than a robbery, even though his friends were injured.

The 72-year-old said: “How would they know I had a safe? The police haven’t even asked me that. Not even my mates knew I had a safe. They were looking for a safe and if just any burglar had come in here they wouldn’t have been able to take it as the bolts were five inches long.”

Harrow Police confirmed that nine safes have been stolen in residential burglaries in the last three months.

A police spokesman said an investigation has been carried out by Harrow’s Burglary Squad and none of Mr Large’s items have been recovered. No arrests have been made.

She said: “We have not received a complaint in relation to this incident.”
