A charity is appealing for volunteers to donate time to blind residents.

Hillingdon Association for the Blind wants volunteers who can spend two hours, including 30 minutes travel time, at least once a fortnight helping blind people with tasks like reading and shopping.

Charity coordinator, Christina Hind, said: "It's about someone having control over their life. If someone knows a volunteer is going to come regularly then they can have more control over their activities.

"We need more volunteers to come forward and help make a world of difference to the lives of blind people."

Ickenham resident Jean Clement, 70, is one of 20 registered blind people on a waiting list for volunteers.

She said: "I don't always know the difference between junk mail and important letters. I might not get my mail read for 10 days and you hope there's nothing urgent.

"It would be helpful to have someone who could tell you what's on at the theatre so you don't miss anything, and what bargains are in the supermarkets. Blind people all over Hillingdon would benefit from this service."
