Engineering works in a busy road in Acton were temporarily halted last week after safety concerns were raised.

Contractors working for Scottish and Southern Electric (SSE) Power Distribution started laying new state-of-the-art underground cables in Popes Lane as part of a major £19m project on July 28.

Concerns about the work were raised with Ealing Council, and a spokesperson said: “Engineering works on Popes Lane were inspected by the council's network management team who discovered safety issues with the depth of excavation works and temporarily halted the project to investigate.

“Ealing Council worked in partnership with SSE to ensure these matters were quickly resolved and operations have now resumed.”

A spokesman for SSE confirmed work had halted for a short time but was up and running again.

SSE is replacing sections of its networks with 15km of gas filled cables between Ealing and Isleworth.

The work is part of a larger £19m project to install three new underground cables between substations between Popes Lane, and Bridge Road and Osterley Court in Isleworth.

The engineering works in Popes Lane is expected to take around four months to complete and is resulting in temporary lane and road closures.
