AN elderly woman has died following an early morning fire in Stamford Brook Avenue.

Fire engines descended on the road just after 7.15am this morning (11) after reports that a fire had broken out in a first floor flat directly opposite Stamford Brook Common.

Around 20 firefighters attended the scene and had brought it under control by 8.30am.

The elderly female, believed to have been in the bedroom at the time, has yet to be named.

Neighbours were shocked by the news. One Goldhawk Road resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "My husband was out running this morning and he said that he could smell smoke and this was about 6.30ish. When he got back home he told me there was a strong smell outside but didn't know where it was coming from.

"By the time he left for work, about an hour later, the building was surrounded by fire engines and there was a lot of activity by the Common. It's terrible news to hear that someone died. It's very sad."

The cause of the fire is being investigated but at this stage it is believed to be non-suspicious.

More to follow.
