A LUNCH club which is a hub for elderly residents has been given a new lease of life thanks to some elbow grease and a lot of community spirit.

The United Anglo Caribbean Society which runs it says redecorating the club in Hanbury Road, South Acton, has given it a new lease of life.

It was organised by the society's outreach worker, Sonny Takhar, who contacted Business in the Community, a charity which helps companies volunteer for good causes.

Real estate consultants DTZ, based in east London, sent a team to paint and put up a wallpaper mural depicting a beach scene. The work at the the club, which caters for 30 people from all backgrounds, four days a week, was carried out on June 24.

Mr Takar said: “They were brilliant, so friendly and professional. Before it looked so 1970s you could have rented it out as a set for (the television programme) Ashes to Ashes. We run bingo and other activities but we want to do more and attract more members.

"The older generation are happy with a cup of tea and a chat but the younger generation, those in their 50s and 60s, want pilates and yoga and things like that, so this is just the beginning.”
