Pupils of Acton High School have received £1,000 to launch a new local community project to develop garden spaces in Ealing.

The grant was awarded to the school in Gunnersbury Lane as part of City Pitch, a joint initiative between the Mayor’s Fund for London and the Santander Foundation, where young people from across London pitch for a share of funding to develop a community project.

As part of their project, Acton High School has set up a group of 'eco-warriors' who have been actively promoting environmental issues within the school, and are planning a new school garden for the benefit of the whole community.

Matthew Patten, Chief Executive, Mayor’s Fund for London, said: “City Pitch is an opportunity to empower young people to make a difference in their local community and it is inspiring to hear how passionate they are about making a difference.

“The young people also learn many new skills throughout the process of creating an idea, pitching it and then implementation, as well as through the advice and support offered by the Santander employees who mentor each group.”

The final City Pitch for 2014 takes place at City Hall on December 11 where a further six youth clubs will pitch their project proposals to be awarded £1,000 each.

City Pitch is delivered in partnership with London Youth, Team London and Free the Children who support and challenge young people across London.
