THE NOTTING Hill Carnival will start an hour earlier this August, in an attempt to get community floats around the neighbourhood before nightfall.

After a series of talks intended to make the event safer, London Notting Hill Carnival (LNHC) has asked Kensington and Chelsea Council for a 9am start.

This will ensure that the 138 vehicles coming onto the Carnival route will complete it before nightfall.

Kensington and Chelsea Council, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police have also called the judging point on Great Western Road to be closed by 6.30pm and for noise levels to be 'more rigorously' noted.

Chris Boothman, LNHC’s company secretary, said: "We are committed to delivering a safe and enjoyable Carnival for everyone and an earlier start will help us to achieve this.”

Councillor Merrick Cockell, leader of the Royal Borough, added: “We all agree that an earlier finish will make Carnival much safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

"The eyes of the world are on us and the capital deserves a great Carnival it can be proud of."
