EALING Council is sticking to its decision not to lower the Town Hall flag in tribute to Baroness Margaret Thatcher, despite pressure from the opposition.

Council leader Julian Bell said that because it is not a state funeral they are under no obligations, nor is there any precedent which says they should take such action.

He said: “The Queen has not ordered me to lower it. That hasn’t been done for any previous Prime Minister and nothing has changed. I feel that the national events are more appropriate.”

David Millican, Conservative leader, said that after asking numerous times for flags to be flown at half mast over the Town Hall his party is very disappointed.

Mr Millican’s request to observe a minute’s silence for the former Prime Minister at last night’s (16) council meeting was also rejected.

Mr Bell has confirmed that the authority are not holding their own events to mark Lady Thatcher’s death.

He said: “My sympathies go to Baroness Thatcher’s children and grandchildren at this time.”
