THIS week a legal challenge is being mounted in the High Court against the government's decision to approve a third runway at Heathrow.

Many groups are involved, including a number of boroughs such as Hillingdon, Hounslow, Richmond, Hammersmith & Fulham, Wandsworth, Kensington & Chelsea and Windsor & Maidenhead.

One, however, is conspicuous by its absence - Ealing. This absence is both puzzling and worrying as Ealing Council is signed up to the 2M Group and has been forthright in its opposition to the third runway. Are they having second thoughts or is it a question of cost?

If it's the former then the council needs to come clean on its current position.

If it's the latter then frankly I would rather not have had the £50 council tax rebate at Christmas. Far better that the money be spent on the legal challenge rather than relying on council tax payers in other boroughs to foot the bill.
