HIGHWAYS chiefs are under pressure to improve the visibility of road signs after two juggernauts got stranded in New Haw because of a low bridge.

The delivery lorries got stuck in Byfleet Road on consecutive days when the drivers realised too late that a low bridge was blocking their path.

Both became stuck while attempting to turn round in the residential street, blocking the road to oncoming traffic.

The first lorry, belonging to Tesco, was en route to the Brooklands superstore at about 9pm on Wednesday March 19. The other, owned by European Freight Network, was trapped at the same spot at around lunchtime the following day.

Tesco said its lorry had to be "towed to safety" after it became stuck. A spok eswoman for the super-market chain said: "We cannot really say what caused the lorry to end up in this position but we are investigating further.
