WITH the number of repossessions in the heart of London going up by 71 per cent, it is vital that residents who are facing mortgage difficulties act now before their situation gets any worse.

The latest figures from the Central London County Court, which covers many Westminster cases, show many people are struggling but help and advice from the council is readily

available. We can play a part in helping to minimise the number of repossessions but we would reiterate to residents that they must talk to their lender as soon as they think they may struggle to pay their mortgage.

There are a range of services available to residents, and under a joint scheme by the council and the Citizens' Advice Bureau, hundreds of people can seek benefits advice or assistance on how to manage their debts.

A number of workshops are also being held across the city to help residents develop better budgeting skills, prevent unmanageable debt and reduce their bills.

To help those at risk of losing their homes, we are planning to set up a hardship fund in early July to provide short-term financial support.

Homeowners can also, through the council, apply to the Government's mortgage rescue scheme. We urge any residents who are struggling with their mortgages or facing repossession to contact our housing options service on 020 7641 1000.
