SIX Harrow residents with learning disabilities have been given the opportunity to live more independently at a housing scheme in Rayners Lane.

Handed the keys to their new self-contained one-bedroom flats earlier this month, the six have now moved into Strongbridge Close where they will be offered on-site help from a support worker.

Having previously lived in shared accommodation, or with family, each resident was assessed and identified as suitable for independent living by Harrow Council's Supporting People Team and the Metropolitan Support Trust, who are behind the scheme.

One of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous said: "I was very excited when I saw the new flat. I was happy because I have always lived at home with my parents and moving into my place gave me independence.

"I have a support worker who visits me regularly and encourages me to deal with any problems I have."

Another resident added: "I am very happy in my new flat. I go to college in Ealing and now travel on the Tube on my own. I am more independent now and it is very easy for me to cycle into the town centre from here."

The support network also includes help and advice on managing finances, shopping on a budget, preparing food and establishing a daily routine.
