A charity working with young people with special needs has been awarded a £120,000 grant by Sport England.

Action on Disability , formerly known as HAFAD, won the funding to help young disabled residents stay fit and healthy through sport.

John MacNeely from the charity, which is based in Greswell Street, Fulham , said: “Young people tell us that they face poor access, a lack of information and feel unwelcome at sports clubs.

“They want the same chances as other young people to enjoy sport for its own sake.

“The Paralympics in London and Sochi have raised the profile of disabled sports stars but not much has changed at a grassroots level.”

The money will pay for a new Sport for Life initiative aimed at getting young people excited about sport. It will deliver training to local sports clubs to enable more disabled youngsters to be able to access local clubs.

The project will be launched on June 29 at the charity’s annual swimathon.

The young chefs baked and decorated a range of cakes and cupcakes during a session organised by Let Me Play, which runs free half term activities on behalf of Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
