BIKERS tearing through farmland now run the risk of being caught on camera.
In a bid to deter off-road motorcyclists and quad bikers who are ruining peaceful summer evenings for many people, police officers have begun filming the offenders.
“The trail bikes are causing havoc along the canal paths and on farmland,” said Inspector David George of Hillingdon Police. “It comes up every year and it’s difficult as there are limited tactics once people are on their bikes.”
The Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) in Harefield recently enlisted the help of a police helicopter to chase off offenders, an effective but very costly deterrent.
“People are never keen to be caught on camera,” said Mr George. “It works as a cost-effective deterrent but we can also use it as evidence when we catch up with them at their homes.”
He said there is also a problem in Ickenham, but because people drive to the area with the bikes on trailers, they can be stopped before they begin riding them.
“In Harefield it’s impossible because they ride straight from their homes, and once they’re on their bikes – from a risk point of view – it’s very difficult to deal with them.”
