A DELIVERY driver had a lucky escape when his van narrowly avoided being crushed by a falling tree.

The UPS delivery man was driving along Elmwood Avenue in Feltham on Tuesday morning when high winds caused the giant tree to topple into the road.

The driver escaped without injury, although the windscreen of his van was smashed and a Citroen parked on the road was crushed.

Photographer Darren Graham, who captured pictures of the dramatic scene, said: “I arrived after it had happened and apparently the driver had been driving slowly down the road, looking for an address.

“The van and a Ford Focus were both damaged, but it was the Citroen that took most of the impact – it was crushed. I was talking to an elderly man about it and he said he remembered the tree being there from his childhood, so it must be at least 40 or 50 years old.

“It’s a big tree and if you look at the root base compared to the tree, it’s hard to imagine how it was standing.”

A spokesperson for the delivery firm confirmed that the driver was not injured in the incident.

The Chronicle contacted the emergency services who said they had no record of having been called out to tackle the incident.
