Members of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip Conservative Association meet this evening (Friday, September 12) to decide who will be their candidate to stand at next year's general election.

They have four candidates to choose from, all will be judged on their own merit with the best man or woman for the job being chosen, association members say.

Each candidate will answer questions from the association before a final decision is made at Ruislip High School in Sidmouth Drive.

Opinion polls - unlike our extremely unofficial and unmoderated picture poll - put the London Mayor Boris Johnson as hot favourite to win the borough seat for the conservatives if he is chosen tonight, with many speculating it will allow him to go on to challenge David Cameron at Number 10.

The Prime Minister himself tweeted his delight at the prospect of having one of his "star players on the pitch" when Mr Johnson announced he wanted to make a return to the Commons.

But Hillingdon Council's conservative leader Ray Puddifoot has insisted Mr Johnson is not a "shoo-in" for the seat - which resigning Sir John Randall comfortably won with a majority of 11,000 at the 2010 general election.

Mr Randall has said he will support whoever takes on his seat when he steps down in 2015.

And some have taken to Twitter to say that despite reports suggesting Mr Johnson is likely to win the candidacy, he will have to do just as much as his three rivals to prove himself to the Uxbridge and South Ruislip tories tonight.

During his monthly #AskBoris q&a session on Twitter, the Mayor of London avoided answering any questions relating to his bid to become MP in the borough, but that didn't stop people asking about it.
