BOHRA Muslims travelled thousands of miles to India to join in the festivities to mark the 101st birthday of their religious leader.

His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb reached the milestone on Tuesday March 13.

Weeks of celebrations ensued last year when the spiritual leader visited the Dawoodi Bohra mosque, in Rowdell Road, Northolt, to mark his centenary.

Ali Morbiwala, of Lady Margaret Road, Southall, who made the trip to Surat, said: "The happy and joyous event was held last week. Hundreds of Dawoodi Bohra followers of London and the UK went to India to join thousands and thousands of followers from overseas and various parts of India."

The elderly Syedna, believed to be the oldest leader in their religious history, suffered a mild stroke when he visited London last year. He quickly recovered and announced his son Ali Qadr Syedi Mufaddal Saifuddin Saheb as his successor.
