Two West London cycling schemes have won prizes at the annual London Cycling awards on Wednesday night (16th).

Among the winners on the night were a bike group in Hounslow and another in Kensington and Chelsea , both part of a larger scheme aimed at promoting safe cycling across the capital.

The Great Western Quarter Residents' Bike club in Hounslow was awarded the coveted Cycling Initiative of the Year, while Kensington and Chelsea's Bikeminded Social Media Campaign received the Digital Campaign of the Year award.

Celebrating cycling's growing reputation and popularity, the awards ceremony was held at St Martin in the Field church in Trafalgar Square and was hosted by cycling enthusiast and broadcaster Jeremy Vine.

The Great Western Quarter Resident's club in Hounslow would loan bikes to residents in the local community for three-month periods.

As well as providing cycling equipment, the scheme gives Hounslow residents cycle maps and advice on how to look after their bikes.

The scheme outpaced initiatives in Bexley, Lambeth and Lewisham to be crowned initiative of the year.

Likewise, the Bikeminded Social Media Campaign for Kensington and Chelsea received the Digital Campaign of the Year award, following the launch of its website.

The awards are now in their second year and have proven to be a successful way to promote cycling schemes in local areas.

The council-run scheme aimed to promote cycling by improving conditions for cyclists.

This included installing over 500 new cycle parking spaces around West London.

Alongside the Hounslow and Kensington and Chelsea schemes, two other West London based schemes were nominated for awards. St Gregory's RC Primary school in Ealing was nominated for the Youth Sector Cycling Champion award for its cycling programme, which provided compulsory cycling training and competitions for its students, and the William Wilberforce Trust's Bike Project in Kensington and Chelsea was short-listed for Grassroots Project of the Year.

Speaking after the ceremony, host Jeremy Vine said: “It was great to see so many people coming together for the London Cycling campaign.

“In the end, cycling is about enjoyment, and the night was a reminder that there are some great people doing great things on bikes and for bike riders, and it is one of the most exciting areas of campaigning to be involved in.”

In Chsiwick, Brompton Bike Hire's new folding bikes have been a hit with cyclists.
