An accident hotspot in Bedfont Road has been made safer with the building of a new foot and cycle bridge over the railway.

Four pedestrians were injured in separate incidents at the narrow road bridge last year so Hounslow Council and Transport for London decided to spend £1.5m on the new bridge.

The 3.5m wide bridge, which will keep cyclists and pedestrians away from traffic, was opened last week and has already been branded a success by users.

Sally Esbury, who lives in nearby Bedfont Green Close, said: “This bridge has always been treacherous. I'm a keen cyclist but I wouldn't have cycled or walked over this bridge before. It's too narrow and there are so many accidents here.

“However, now it makes my life much easier because I can just hop on the bike and cycle down to Feltham without worrying about getting knocked down.”

One of the pedestrians injured last year was in critical condition in hospital after the accident and calls for the bridge to be redesigned grew as people were concerned about the lack of pavement over the crossing.

Hounslow Mayor, councillor Paul Lynch, said: “I'm delighted at the opening of the bridge. I first became aware of the need for it when we were developing Bedfont Lakes. The old bridge was an obstacle and this will really make a difference.”

The Mayor of London's transport chief, Kulveer Ranger, said: “The brand new shared-use bridge will make it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists to travel between Bedfont and Feltham.

“We are determined to make cycling in London easier, safer, and more convenient, and this project delivers in every respect. It's great to see Hounslow leading the way and becoming a true biking borough.”
