A CAMPAIGN group which has fought high-profile campaigns against the closure of libraries and children's centres is coming to Hounslow.

London People Before Profit is already well-established in Lewisham, where members have waged war on cuts to public services for several years.

Hounslow People Before Profit will hold its first meeting at Montague Hall, in Montague Road, Hounslow, tomorrow (Tuesday, February 7) from 7.30pm.

George Hallam represented the group in December's Feltham & Heston by-election.

Despite his polling just 128 votes - too few to keep his deposit - campaigners believe there is sufficient support to set up an autonomous group in Hounslow.

Group secretary John Hamilton, a heating engineer by day, said: "The group is open to all who feel that the cuts in public services are unnecessary and a way of tranferring our council tax to the pockets of big businesses at the expense of the the employees and the general public."

In Lewisham, PBP has camapaigned against the closure of libraries and children's centres.

Members have also organised a 'Carnival Against Cuts', a day-long series of demonstrations, and run a cafe in Deptford where people can get free advice on housing and CV writing.

Hounslow Council this year cut spending by £18 million and aims to slash expenditure by a further £42m over the next three years.
