PUPILS at an all-girls school have been rehearsing for what promises to be their biggest and best production ever.

The 90-minute show, The School of Musicals, was written in just five hours by head of music Louisa Bancroft and science teacher Krista Rogers at Bentley Wood High School for Girls in Bridges Road, Stanmore.

It features a cast of 45, including year nine and 10 BTec dance students who will be assessed on their performance.

Mrs Bancroft, who directed the show and conducts an orchestra composed of pupils, teachers and members of Harrow Young Musicians, said: “It is about two girls competing to be elected deputy head girl.

“There’s the bad girl, Harmony, played by Mya Ferguson-McNair, and the pretty girl, Melody, played by Mikayla Scott, and a group of geeks, and it’s about the campaign and election day.

“The music is not original – I’ve taken songs from other musicals and scored them for an orchestra. The opening number contains Good Morning and I Feel Pretty, but the girls’ favourite is The Time Warp.”

Open auditions were held and everyone selected to be involved has been rehearsing ahead of the performances in the school hall, complete with professional spotlights, at 7pm this evening (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday).

The proceeds will go to a fund to buy the rights for a commercial production for future staging.

Mrs Bancroft said: “The girls are really enjoying it. They love the fact we have let them add something to the script. They are really committed and are having so much fun doing it.

“I definitely think it’s going to be the best production we have ever done.”
