IS IT not about time that the London Borough of Ealing should honour one of its most celebrated living sons?

I refer to the thin and gangly giant from Spurs who has just hammered in two goals against Egypt and has now scored 20 goals over 37 games where he has represented England.

His artful goals, his diffidence and good humour are the hallmark of a true and cool English hero.

Peter Crouch is an excellent role model for our young population. Hopefully he will still be representing England for a few years more.

Peter was brought up in Hanwell and we should make him feel wanted here. I think that, either now or following the end of the South Africa games, the Mayor of Ealing should invite him here for a reception and a celebratory tour of the borough.

We need a freeman of the borough that we can be proud of and that people have actually heard of. Until now, there has been a convention that the borough has offered this honour solely to past councillors and aldermen. No doubt councillors are very worthy, but also very boring! I should know. I'm an ex-Ealing councillor myself and perhaps a future one.

So, Peter Crouch for freeman of the borough in 2010. I am ready to start a petition.
