MORE than 50 shoppers have fallen victim to an international credit card scam after criminal gangs targeted a cashpoint and stole personal details.
The rogue cashpoint has affected people in the Uxbridge Road area of Hillingdon, and shocked residents are finding money has been withdrawn in Malaysia.
Sources say that the rogue ATM is in Somerfield mini-market at the Texaco petrol station at Lees Corner.
Since the Gazette issued an appeal on our website urging people to come forward, we have been inundated with emails and calls from irate victims of the fraud.
Sean Bassett, 44, of Widmore Road, Hillingdon, said when he went into his bank, HSBC in Uxbridge Road, Hillingdon, he was told he was one of approximately 50 account holders who had fallen victim to the scam since last Thursday.
He said: "I took a call saying £200 had been drawn out of my account in Malaysia. I couldn't believe it."
Tina Pearce, 37, of Micawber Avenue, Hillingdon, said: "I got a call from the bank asking if I was in Malaysia because £200 had been taken.
"It is quite scary this can happen without anybody noticing. The only cashpoint I use is the Somerfield's one - and I won't be going there in future.
Linda Brown, 49, of Leybourne Road, Hillingdon, had £101 taken out of her account.
She said: "I've had to cancel my card and I have to go into the bank to get money. If I want to get money in the evening I've had it.
"The bank said several people had money taken out in Malaysia. It will make me more careful in the future."
Selina Coleman, of Nelson Close, Hillingdon, said: "I had £100 taken out in Malaysia and I am going to be very careful about cash in the future. I am going to get a 'cashback' instead of using the machines."
The cashpoint belongs to Lloyds TSB, but can be used by other banks' customers, including HSBC, and it appears to be them who are most affected.
HSBC said: "We are aware of a compromised ATM in the area and we are working with the police in every way we can." Nobody at Somerfield was available for comment.
