A man who pushed a 93-year-old to the ground to steal £5 from his wallet has been jailed for 30 months.

Solomon Bygraves carried out the sickening attack on Stanley Evans in Soho, Westminster, on the evening of January 31. He made away with £5.

CCTV footage of the robbery, released by police, showed Bygraves, 29, grabbing Mr Evans’ pocket and knocking him to the ground, and disgusted people around the country.

The frail pensioner had just returned from the shops with his small shopping trolley and was waiting for the lift to go up to his flat.

The CCTV footage later showed Mr Evans holding his face as he struggled to comprehend what had happened.

Bygraves had admitted one charge of robbery at Southwark Crown Court on March 4 and was sentenced at the same court on Tuesday (April 13).

Speaking after Bygraves had pleaded guilty last month, DC Barney Dillon, from Westminster Police, said: “I would like to pay tribute to Mr Evans, who despite his ordeal acted with courage and dignity, which is in complete contrast to the cowardly and shameful actions of Bygraves.”
