A COUNCILLOR who has served Brent for almost a quarter of a century has announced he is to step down.

Bob Blackman (pictured) says he will leave his position at the local elections on May 6.

He has served for almost 24 years as councillor for Preston ward and has spent 20 years as leader of the

Conservative group. He will be standing in Harrow East in the forthcoming general election.

Mr Blackman first stood for Tokyngton ward in May 1986 and was then elected to Preston ward in November 1986. He served as leader of the council from May 1991 until May 1996, and deputy leader from June 2006 until May 2010.

Mr Blackman said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the residents of Brent and working with Brent Council officers during the years.

"There are predicted to be very difficult times for local government in the future and I trust that I have been able to assist in putting Brent into the strongest possible position to cope with the likely pressures. It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Brent for the past 24 years."
