Harrow on the Hill councillor Eileen Kinnear is to appeal her expulsion from the Conservative faction of Harrow Council.

She was removed a fortnight ago for "a number of serious group breaches", although what this specifically alludes to has not been made public.

Mrs Kinnear, who was has served on the authority since 1990 and is an independent until the situation is resolved, confirmed she has invoked the party's internal appeals procedure.

She did not wish to elaborate on the circumstances of her removal from the party - which holds the majority on the council - but did wish to thank the 16 local residents who wrote to the Observer last week in support of her.

Councillor Robert Benson (Independent) was booted out by the Tories following his guilty plea in August to engaging in sexual activity in a public laboratory.

There are now two Independent councillors, the same number of Liberal Democrats, 24 Labour and 35 Conservative.
