In response to Cliff Hearne's letter (Chronicle, November 20) I would like to make a few points.

The council recognises that Osterley Road is a high priority for resurfacing and as Mr Hearne mentions, one section has been completed.

The southern section of the road was left because there was a considerable amount of building work being carried out in the area, and we felt it was wise to wait to resurface this section until after those works were completed.

I can assure you that that part of Osterley Road will be resurfaced when the building works are completed.

We also realise that the street lighting in Gresham Road is in need of upgrading and we had planned to carry out replacement works in this street starting in October.

Unfortunately we have experienced a delay in delivery of steel lighting columns.

Again you can be assured that this work has been re-schedule to begin early in the New Year, when we expect to take delivery of new columns. We will be writing to residents of Gresham Road with this information.

On the more general point, I agree that the state of many of Hounslow's streets is unacceptable but I would remind readers that we have clear plans to put that right.

We have been awarded £198million in Private Finance Initiative credits for the upgrading of our roads and pavements.

Under the government's PFI regulations we are required to undertake a complex procurement exercise which takes about three years.

After this, the upgrading works will start.
