HILLINGDON council is to build a new 'salt dome' which can hold up to 4,180 tonnes of grit to help them deal with severe weather in future Winters.

This year Hillingdon upped its reserves of salt from 2,500 tonnes to 3,500, and it is currently stored at the Harlington Road Depot in Hillingdon.

The new storage facility is to be built at the Civic Amenity Site, in New Years Green Lane, Harefield, as part of the council's multi-million pound plan to redevelop the site.

All salt will in future be stored at the Harefield depot, and the Harlington Road Depot will just be used for storage of vehicles.

The advantage the Harefield 'salt dome' would offer is that it will allow the grit to be stored undercover, as at the moment it lies exposed to the elements.
