Your front page story last week (Kier corruption allegations) carries the criticism that Harrow Council has 'dragged' in investigating allegations of corruption together with its construction partner Kier.
Can I reassure readers nothing is further from the truth. A joint investigation with Kier into these claims was ongoing prior to the publication of your story.
First, we have been in regular contact with Morley Young since our initial meeting. We expect to have further discussions with him as the investigation continues.
Second, we have, contrary to your story, spoken to the second company making allegations about corruption. The reality is that fraud investigations take time because they are complex and there are significant numbers of people to be interviewed.
We are, however, committing substantial amounts of time and resource to get to the bottom of these claims. At present, it is important to stress that these allegations are unproven. If, however, it appears that Harrow Council has been defrauded, nobody should be in any doubt we will take vigorous action to recoup any losses.
