CAMPAIGNERS fighting to keep Acton Baths open as long as possible have handed in a petition of 1,862 signatures at a council meeting on Tuesday (18).

The leisure centre is set to close on December 4 to build two new swimming pools as part of the £18million Acton Town Hall regeneration project.

Sarah Bradley, representing angered residents, asked councillors why the baths could not remain open until building work begins next spring when planning has not yet been approved.

Council leader Julian Bell explained that it was necessary to drain the pool and check for asbestos before contractors go in.
