HILLINGDON Council has given a mixed response to moves by the Boundary Commission to redraw constituency borders in the borough.

In a motion agreed on Thursday, the council welcome the proposed return of the Ickenham ward to the Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat, as well as the joining of Yiewsley and West Drayton in one constituency.

But Councillor Douglas Mills (Manor, Con) said the council should object to splitting the Barnhill and Yeading wards away from Hayes and into a new Greenford and Northolt seat. A move to join Feltham with Hayes was criticised.

Cllr Mills said: “We don’t believe the commission has understood the community of Hayes and Yeading and the idea that Hayes has a common interest with Feltham is just wrong.

“We will before the end of the consultation period present detailed proposals that ensure our residents are put first, by suggesting the main Hayes area is linked along the Uxbridge Road with Southall and a separate suggestion that the Yiewsley and West Drayton area is linked with the Feltham wards in Hounslow [borough].”

The Boundary Commission is consulting on plans to cut numbers of MPs nationwide from 650 to 600, and from 73 to 68 in London, which would involve the redrawing of nearly every seat by the 2015 General Election.
