BUNGLING council workers caused misery for motorists when they when they put up a no parking sign next to another one inviting drivers to stop and shop.
Martyn Jackman, engineering manager at Vortex Communications in The Grove, Ealing, said he had never seen so many parking fines handed out in one day.
The 41-year-old said the new controlled parking zone sign, allowing only permit holders to park most hours of the day, went up last Tuesday (9).
He added: "It's classic Ealing Council not doing anything right.
"It has always been free parking, at least for the past ten to 15 years. Then about six years ago they brought in a two hour limit but everyone knew how the system works.
"I just didn't understand why they didn't take down or cover up the old sign. If they wanted to keep both they should have at least painted the road so people know which area is which. Even the traffic wardens don't seem to know what they're doing.
"It's probably scaring people off coming to park here now.
"People shouldn't be paying any fines, you can't confuse people like that."
A council spokesman said: "Unfortunately the sign was installed in the wrong location and we accept that it is confusing to motorists.
"We're reviewing tickets issued since the installation of this sign and have temporarily suspended parking enforcement outside the row of shops.
"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
