A six-year-old boy whose quick thinking saved his grandad's life has been honoured by his school.

George Bowe went on a fishing trip to Farlows Lake in Iver with his grandad, Peter Bowe, on May 24, but panic descended on the tranquil scene when non-swimmer Mr Bowe fell into the water.

Luckily George remained calm and rushed to get his dad, Steve, who managed to get Mr Bowe out just in time.

His grandad is convinced he would have drowned if it was not for George's swift actions.

George, of Linden Close, Ruislip Manor, said: "Grandad went near the lake and it was really muddy. He slipped and then he nearly lost my rod.

"He was holding onto a bush then he fell into the water, and he just put his hand up and said 'help'.

"I was worried and a little bit scared, so I ran off to get my daddy. He was in his tent with his radio on, so he couldn't hear the splash.

"I didn't go in because it was steep and I can't swim in deep water, but I knew daddy would get him out."

Mr Bowe, 53, of Silverdale Road, Hayes, said: "I slipped into the lake and I banged my head on the bank, and was swallowing water.

"I can't swim at all and I was out of my depth straight away.

"I said: 'Give us a hand here George', but rather than getting involved he knew to get his dad. He is quite a clever little fella.

"If he had come in after me that would have been even more of a nightmare.

"I would definitely have drowned if it wasn't for George.

"He really was a hero, but it doesn't phase him at all.

"I am very proud of him. I told him I will have to get him a very special treat, and he said he wants to go night fishing."

George's mother, Lisa, 28, sent a letter to Lady Bankes Infant School in

Dawlish Drive, Ruislip Manor, to tell them what George had done, and they arranged a surprise assembly for the youngster last Wednesday, and also gave him a certificate.

The deputy headteacher, Sylvia George, said: "We abandoned what we were going to do that day and had a prayer and a song to celebrate what George had done to make him feel even more special."

Mrs Bowe also sent a letter to George's favourite football team, Chelsea, telling them what he did in the hope they would write back.
