JEAN Palmer, director of planning and community services (gorgeous salary), tells us that Hillingdon deserves better than the 'unfortunate' comments of English Heritage (List of threatened areas sparks fury, Uxbridge Gazette, July 1).

If Jean would join me at the foot of the fire escape in Yiewsley Library, we would be standing together in a few square yards of ankle deep, flyblown rubbish.

This long-standing, awful mess mutely tells us more about Hillingdon Council's attitude to environmental matters than Jean could offer after a whole day at the keyboard. Bluntly, it stinks.

Perhaps Jean could tell us what 'restrictions' prevent this area being cleaned up in the next 24 hours?
