A THREE-DAY musical celebration will take place next week as the campaign steps up to install a blue plaque honouring Ealing’s cultural heritage.

The Ealing Club is planning to unveil a plaque on March 17, 2012 at The Red Room, originally the venue where a host of seminal British blues and rock bands played during the 1960s, including The Rolling Stones.

Ealing is mentioned several times by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards in Life, his best-selling autobiography. Singer Mick Jagger also cited the club in an interview with the BBC earlier this year.

Three concerts will be held at The Red Room on Tuesday November 22, Wednesday November 23 and Thursday November 24. Artists include Robert Hokum, The Bojali Blues Band, The Fallen Heroes and The Hubcaps.

There will be a special ‘Louisiana’ night with swamp rock DJs and a ‘Heritage Blues Night’ to cap the event. Proceeds from the gigs will go towards the blue plaque.

Alistair Young, secretary for The Ealing Club said: “Thanks to an article by the Ealing Gazette in July, significant weight has been added to the campaign to get The Red Room recognised.”

He added that Ealing is now mentioned overseas in a lecture delivered to students at The University of Kansas, thanks to Dr Roberta Schwartz, director of the musicology department, who got in touch with the club earlier this year.

Mr Young said: “Over 1,500 students from Kansas have now learned about the club and its importance. If we can help others around the world and locally to do the same, it could benefit the local community way into the future.”

Ealing’s musical past pust other London boroughs to shame. Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall Amplifiers, had his first shop in Hanwell during the 1960s and personally sold an amp to Jimi Hendrix.

Seminal heavy rock group Deep Purple used Hanwell Community Centre as a practice. Other musical legends with links to the borough include The Who, The Clash and Queen singer Freddie Mercury, who attended Ealing Art College.
