A TEAM of volunteers dug deep to create a peaceful garden area at Northfields Community Centre.

The 12 young people, aged 16 to 25, took 10 days to create new flower beds and plant flowers at the back of the centre in Northcroft Road, Ealing. They were apprentices from the Prince’s Trust programme at Ealing, Hammersmith a West London College based in Acton.

Volunteer Kealey Paul said: “We are currently offering our time and resources to try to bring people together in the Northfields area for a positive cause.

“Due to the centre’s lack of funds, we decided to offer out time and ideas to create a peaceful and eye-catching garden. As young people, we believe that by making an effort to improve the gardens, more local people will become involved and the council will take a closer interest in the long-term maintenance of the garden.”

The students raised £220 after completing a 10km sponsored walk through central London to pay for the plants.

Northfields Councillor David Millican opened the gardens on Friday last week (October 26).

“What a great effort these Prince’s Trust volunteers have made. They raised the money themselves and then created the garden for others to use. It has helped them develop practical skills in teamwork, which I hope will assist them find a job,” he said.

The students will now embark on other work experience placements, including QPR Football Club and MP and former actress Glenda Jackson’s office.
