The number of crimes being solved by Harrow's police force has fallen, and funding cuts are to blame says a Labour MP.

According to the latest available data, just 19 per cent of offences were solved in Harrow during 2011 and 2012, and London-wide data shows no improvement based on more recent statistics.

Harrow West's Labour MP Gareth Thomas said: “It’s vitally important that Harrow police have the resources they need to tackle crime in the borough and keep our streets safe.

"In Harrow we’ve lost 96 officers, including many officers who had years of experience behind them. As a result we’ve seen an increase in unsolved crimes and our overstretched police are taking longer to respond to calls for help."

In March 2010, Harrow had 403 police officers and 116 police community support officers. Earlier this year however data released by the Metropolitan Police showed that the number of officers has been reduced by 18 per cent in the borough.
