FLAMES engulfed a coach on the M4 in Heston last night, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air.

The coach burst into fire on the hard shoulder of the westbound carriageway, near Heston services, at about 6.20pm.

The vehicle was empty apart from a driver and co-driver, both of whom escaped unharmed before firefighters arrived.

Four fire engines attended and 21 firefighters tackled the blaze, which was under control just before 8pm.

The motorway remained fully closed westbound until 10pm, causing huge tailbacks. It was fully re-opened at 10.45pm.
