Christmas is such a happy time for so many people.  A time for families to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

Our two adult sons still live at home and seem to appreciate Christmas just as they always have. Over a Sunday dinner some weeks ago we enjoyed a lively debate as to what type of Christmas tree we should have. My wife favoured a synthetic, modernist creation that some close friends have bought, but our sons were having none of it. They wanted the real thing and, by the way, it had to be taller than them and they are both over 6ft.  I dug deep into my pockets and the tree we bought just about fills our dining room and is giving us all huge pleasure.

But please spare a thought for those many people who might be lonely and perhaps have lost hope and faith for the future.  Christmas, with its focus on home, family and friends, can be a very difficult time for them.  So I want to voice my huge respect and admiration for all those who will be working over Christmas supporting them.

Spare a thought for the volunteers working over Christmas at the Samaritans who have their West London branch in South Ealing. If you phone the Samaritans you could well find yourself talking to someone at that office.  Then spare a thought for those who work at the YMCA hostels. They care for mostly young people.  Many will have left home under very sad circumstances.  Please remember them, and, as its Christmas, I ask you to offer a prayer for all those working hard to support the less fortunate over the holiday period.

I wish you all a happy Christmas and joyous New Year.
